"HULK VS. THOR"
Hulk Vs. Thor, was one of two productions for the "Marvel Lionsgate" release of "Hulk Vs.", the other title being "Hulk Vs. Wolverine". This sequence take place after the Hulk invades Asgard, defeats Thor. Leaving Thor believed dead, Hulk climbs to reach the royal chambers of "Odin", who sleeps the "Odinsleep", helpless to intervene. Loki, who has lost control of the Hulk watches on. A healed Thor arrives with Amora the Enchantress. to find Banner and restore his soul to the Hulk, thus making the Hulk more controllable.
"Ultimate War" was a project that we had started but were unable to finish as our legal department politely informed us that 2 forty minute films with Wolverine equaled one full on motion picture. Of which we no longer had the rights to. So we went with "Hulk Vs. Thor" instead. We had planned to do a straight on adaptation of the comic with one major exception. We would actually show all the fighting that the comic never actually showed. This is Storm's taking on Thor. It was somewhat one sided. Oh, and we were going to have Cap take on Wolverine without the "Indiana Jones" moment. It would have been fun. These were done using marker and pencil.(before digital)
Fantasy segment for a proposed live action film. A goth's reaction to how to deal with intolerant rude waiters. These were done using standard photoshop techniques.
X-MEN EVOLUTION With Evolution we were always exploring ways in which to treat the characters. And even though the show dealt with mutants and giant robots and action, at it's core it was about the X-Men as teens. So occasionally we would throw a little something out there in-between the giant robot fights. "Walk on the Wild Side" was one of those endeavors and featured a music-video featuring all of the girl characters. It brought me back to my days at the old Marvel Studios where I boarded many of the "Jem" music numbers for that series. This is from "Walk on the Wild Side". Marker pencil and ink.
"GRIM REMINDER" This is the opening teaser of season ones Wolverine centered story, "Grim Reminder" one of the funner stories from the first season. For me it's actually a set up episode for Wolverines origin which I was able to take and expand in the "Hulk Vs. Wolverine" short film from Marvel/LionsGate a few years later. Pencils with later photoshop tones added later.
X-MEN EVOLUTION "AScENSION PART 1"This is an example of fleshing out a script. In the original version the script called for basic action. The Blackbird lands. Kitty phases through the Sphinx and sees a handle, she pushes it, a door opens. etc, etc,. A good storyboard artist understands the needs of visual enhancement. and where detail is lacking is expected to "punch up the scene." In this sequence, all those minor points are addressed but everything else is spiced up to give some visual buildup to the climax of this cliff-hanger.
When Kitty Pryde enters the Sphinx, she just doesn't walk into it she dives into it. Other considerations help shape the action. "How deep does she have to dive?" " How long does she have to dive?" " Is the air breathable when she finds a place to turn solid again?" So I added a simple light attachment to a breathing mask for when she phases into the ground. This not only makes sense when considering those questions, it visually adds to the picture. The light cuts through the darkness casting everything into a cold otherworldly realm. Which of course sets everything up for the eventual reveal of Apokolips.
Other inclusions are the manner in which the passage opens to Apokolip's underground lair. Instead of a simple door. (archeologists would have found that opening a long time ago.) The very stones of the base shift and move like a giant puzzle, reconfiguring it's proportions to open up a very long passage that leads far under the Sphinx itself. (The Sphinx, although big. is not nearly large or grand enough to have a football field sized enclosure encased within it.) Time to go deep underground, and adding the shifting blocks was a great way to build up the danger and suspense leading into the reveal. None of which, was scripted. "pocahantas 2" |
NOT THE DISNEY ONE. This was done for Rick Rich productions as a direct to dvd feature. I enjoyed it because of it's content, it's period feel and the strength of her real story. Pencils on rough xerox paper. If you use pencils it's better to use paper that has a nice tooth to it to help cement in the pencil. (has a nicer feel to it when drawing too.)

Alright there are no footballs in this piece. But I had a chance to do some fun sci-fi. Usually I will always set up storyboard sample for the first few episodes of a series or season to help artist get the feel of what I want them to capture. It also helps to keep my own own skills sharpened. (All photoshop)
